Semana Santa, Destination: Germany

Beethovens home!
Arrival in Cologne at Train Station
Ater my great day in Amsterdam, I headed to Cologne, Germany where my American friend named Bethany is studying. I arrived at about midnight via Bahn train. The train ride was about 3 hours. Bethany met me at the train station and we headed to her apartment. I was a bit exhausted from traveling so we went straight to bed the first night. On Saturday morning, Bethany's friend came over and all 3 of us had planned a day trip to Bonn, Germany. The weather was extremely cold the whole weekend(about 30 degrees Fahrenheit) but this did not stop us from exploring Bonn and Cologne. The train ride from Cologne to Bonn was about an hour. In Bonn, we went to the plaza and took a tour of Beethovens house! It was really interesting to see where the infamous Betthoven lived and where he composed his music. Before going back to Cologne, we stopped at a little bakery and grabbed a snack.

After the day in Bonn, we went back to Bethanys flat and had a beer. I had been longing to try German beer in Germany, so I tried my first German beer which was really tasty! We then had dinner and got ready for the night. Bethany had just started her semester the week before I arrived, so the weekend I was in Cologne, there was a big welcome party for the students! The welcome party was help right next to the Dom Cathedral in a club. It was a neon party so we had neon paint on us and danced all night! I got to meet a lot of Bethany's german friends and I really had a great time at the party.

The Dom at night

The next day(Sunday), we explored downtown Cologne. We went inside the Dom and strolled the streets of Cologne. We got a late start, so we didn't do too much on Sunday. Later that night, Bethany had an "American style dinner" with a few of her German friends. After that, we all went out to a bar for her roommates birthday. We had some cocktails and shared nice conversations with Bethany and her friends.

The last day in Cologne, Bethany's friend Nina came to visit and all 3 of us went back to the Dom and climbed up to the very top, where one can view a panoramic view of all of Cologne. You could view the great Rhine river and the rest of the city. The Cathedral in Cologne is Germany's most visited landmark and the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe! The sight from the top was breathtaking! The 509 steps to the top was definitely worth the climb! After visiting the Cathedral and walking around town, we went to a bar and had a typical German meal and a beer. After lunch, we went back to Bethany's flat and took it easy, as I was leaving that night. I booked a train from Cologne to Linz, Austria and I would leave at 4am the next morning to continue my adventure!
